Avianca begins testing to customize its menu for sale onboard

  • Between March and August, the airline will have a trial period in which customers will share their feedback on the menu options that will be available for purchase on its flights.
  • In this pilot, food and beverages will be offered free of charge and the buy-on-board project will only materialize in the second half of 2022.
  • The menus were developed in conjunction with gategroup, one of the most experienced catering companies in the design and management of in-flight sales programs for airlines globally.

Bogotá, March 7, 2022. Avianca continues to listen to its customers and adjust its in-flight service. It was now time for the food, snacks and beverage menu offered by the airline on its medium and some long-haul flights.

As of today, the company is preparing to revamp its in-flight food offerings and is providing customers with a test menu for them to share their opinion on the different options they would be willing to pay for.

"We are making progress in personalizing the service and letting each customer choose how they want to fly. With your feedback, the airline will design an in-flight menu with products that are extensively tested and approved by our customers. A process that we are undergoing with the advice of gategroup, an expert airline catering provider and world leader in this category," said Paula Ayala, Director of Customer Experience and Onboard Service.

The tests will be carried out between March and August of this year, only on international routes departing from Colombia with a duration of more than 2 hours and from other countries, where the regulation allows it, from 1 hour onwards. Flights to and from Europe and those on the Bogota-Los Angeles-Bogota route will retain the current onboard service and will not be included in the onboard sales program, mainly due to the duration of the flight.

The menu will vary according to the duration of the flight and will change every month, as the airline hopes to test different options and discover the preferences of its customers. On shorter flights, it will offer a basic menu, while on longer flights it will have a superior menu, as part of the service and in addition to water, it will have hot beverage options.

With the analysis of customer feedback, in September the airline expects to introduce its new offering and start selling food and beverages on its flights.
