Miami, December 26, 2024. With a steadfast commitment to strengthening connectivity between Florida and Latin America, Avianca has announced its intention to launch new routes connecting Fort Lauderdale with Medellin and Managua**, Miami with San José and Guatemala City, and Tampa—its newest destination—with Bogotá via direct flights.
These proposed operations, set to begin in 2025, will bring Avianca’s offering to 16 direct routes from Florida to Latin America, solidifying its position as one of the leading carriers with the most robust connectivity in the region.
“Florida has historically been a key gateway for connections to Latin America, which is why it is essential for us to contribute to reuniting families, boosting tourism, and promoting business. So far in 2024, we have transported over four million passengers on more than 27,000 flights to and from the United States. These new routes address the needs of our customers and provide an opportunity to offer more direct flights to key destinations in both regions where we already have a strong presence,” said Frederico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca.
New Routes* Planned for Launch in 2025:
Tampa: A New Destination to Connect Travelers
Tampa is one of Florida’s major cities, and this historic connection, which Avianca aims to operate for the first time, will provide travelers in both directions with more opportunities for direct travel. Passengers in Tampa will be able to connect through Bogotá to over 75 destinations across 25+ countries in the Americas and Europe. Additionally, they will have access to 25 domestic destinations within Colombia, offering seamless connections to all regions of the country, including vibrant cities like Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, Quibdó, San Andrés, Leticia, and more.
“The significance of a new Avianca route between Tampa and Bogota is enormous, being TPA’s first to South America in nearly 50 years and a long-awaited nonstop connection,” TPA CEO Joe Lopano said. “We expect this flight to be popular with both business travelers and those connecting with loved ones, as well as adding an exciting and vibrant new travel destination to our route map. We look forward to celebrating the launch of this service with Avianca at a future date.”
Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, stated: “This new direct flight between Tampa Bay and Bogotá not only strengthens connectivity between Colombia and the United States, our primary source market for tourists, but also marks an important step in expanding our presence in Florida. This route becomes the fourth city in the state to have direct connections, in addition to Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale. Together with Avianca, we continue working to establish Colombia as a world-class destination, fostering tourism and cultural and commercial exchange with this strategic market.”
By the end of 2024, Avianca will operate a network of 165 routes across more than 25 countries, including eight new destinations, reaffirming its commitment to connecting more people, driving the development of new routes, and creating a positive impact in the communities it serves.
