With RouteMe, Avianca Implements New Tool to Transform Passenger Mobility in Airports

  • RouteMe is a new solution to simplify mobility within airports and facilitate navigation for travelers, especially those with disabilities.
  • Without the need for downloads or prior registration, Avianca users can instantly start their journey by scanning a QR code placed at strategic points throughout the airport.
  • Currently, RouteMe is being implemented as a pilot program in the United States, launching on February 28, 2025, at New York's international airports.

NEW YORK, February 26, 2025– To accelerate its commitment to enhancing the passenger experience, Avianca has begun implementing the pilot phase of RouteMe, an innovative airport navigation tool. This technological solution, accessible via NFC (Near Field Communication) or QR codes, helps travelers find their way to key areas such as check-in counters, baggage drop-off points, boarding gates, and more. The pilot program will launch on February 28 at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, with plans to expand to additional airports across North and Latin America throughout the year.

With this initiative, Avianca aims to offer solutions that address real customer needs, providing autonomy and simplicity—especially for travelers with disabilities who prefer to navigate the airport independently. RouteMe uses digital maps to guide passengers step-by-step, quickly and easily, without requiring app downloads, registration, or additional costs. The tool offers visual and audio instructions in more than 22 languages, automatically selected based on the user’s phone language. It also includes accessible routes for passengers with reduced mobility, along with the option to preview and share itineraries through the Avianca app or confirmation email, making travel planning even easier.

How Does RouteMe Work?

  1. Scan: The passenger scans a QR code located at a designated starting point.
  2. Select Destination: The desired location within the airport is selected.
  3. Personalized Guidance: RouteMe generates a customized route and provides clear, real-time directions.
  4. Navigation: The user enters the Avianca app, selects their origin and destination points, and starts navigation.

"With RouteMe, we aim to transform our passengers’ experience by simplifying their airport journey. This tool is a huge step towards our commitment to providing and enabling an inclusive travel experience. By introducing accessible routes, we ensure that all our travelers can move easily through the airport, regardless of their needs," said Michael Swiatek, Chief Accessibility Officer at Abra.

The RouteMe team also commented: "We created RouteMe with the mission of making navigation accessible to everyone, prioritizing those who need it most. While current tools imitate the experience of driving, people do not navigate like machines. Through artificial intelligence, we are revolutionizing indoor navigation to adapt to the way humans truly move. Our partnership with Avianca will transform the passenger experience and shape the future of airport navigation."

Avianca remains committed to innovation and continuous improvement, striving to offer customers solutions that enhance their travel experience and make their journeys more enjoyable.
