Every action is an opportunity to build a more sustainable future
Fleet renewal
With the incorporation of A320 NEO aircraft into our fleet, which offer a 20% fuel savings, we have achieved a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions compared with the previous generation fleet, according to the manufacturer. In 2024, 6 NEO aircraft were added, for a total of 47.
Aircraft reconfiguration
By reconfiguring more than 100 aircraft, we increased capacity by 20% and reduced CO₂ emissions per revenue passenger-kilometer (RPK) by 15.35% compared with a non-reconfigured aircraft.
CO₂ compensation
From 2019 to December 2024, we have compensated approximately 3,177,996 tons of CO₂, equivalent on average to 66% of the total emissions generated by our domestic flights in Colombia during these years. This compensation was carried out through the purchase of carbon credits from certified projects in Colombia that provide environmental benefits and contribute to the social development of the communities near these projects.
Carbon emission compensation platform
Since 2022, we have partnered with CHOOOSE™, a climate-tech company, to implement the voluntary carbon offsetting platform for passengers. In 2024, our customers compensated 178.41 tons of CO₂e in the “Guatemala Coastal Conservation” and/or “Delfines Cupica Redd+” projects in the Chocó region. Learn more about these projects at avianca-chooose.
We also have a platform available for Avianca Cargo, where our customers can monitor and offset the carbon emissions associated with cargo transported on our aircraft.
Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
We are the only airline in Latin America to obtain a B rating in CDP’s climate change program for five consecutive years (2020–2024), reaffirming our commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and climate action.
Renewable energy
We generated 816,896 kWh of solar energy, representing 34% of the energy consumed at the MRO facility, used to support aircraft maintenance operations at this site.
Thanks to our partnerships with strategic environmental managers, the non-hazardous waste generated by our operation is recovered and transformed to give it a second life. With this initiative, we support waste pickers, single mothers from the Puerta de Oro and Planeta Verde Recycling Associations in Colombia, and children receiving medical care at Fundación Hermano Miguel in Ecuador.
Between 2019 and 2024, we reduced conventional waste by 27%, increased the recycling rate of non-hazardous waste by 6 percentage points compared with total waste generated in our main stations, and increased hazardous waste recovery by 14 percentage points, reaching 81% utilization. Additionally, we delivered more than 1,231 tons of recyclable materials from our operation to local associations.
Together with our partner Waste2Worth, we conducted a circular economy assessment to identify opportunities to improve the use of onboard service packaging and materials in Avianca VIP Lounges, exploring more sustainable options and models that promote circularity.
Our environmental strategy goes hand in hand with our commitment to the communities where we operate. Thanks to our partnerships, waste pickers, single mothers, and children from low-income families who require medical treatment are being supported.
We support the Puntos Verdes social program by environmental manager LITO. In 2024, we delivered 24 tons of electronic waste that were invested in the “Banco de Hilos” project, which equipped five community dining rooms for Wayuu communities in La Guajira.
The waste is transformed into raw materials to manufacture new items such as:
● Cardboard boxes
● Toys
● Product containers
● Insulating fillers
● Glass bottles
Avianca has put its air operation at the service of communities to transport (at no cost) recyclable waste generated in municipalities and territories located in strategic ecosystems such as the Amazon, San Andrés and Providencia in Colombia, and the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, helping ensure the proper management of this waste outside these areas.
Thanks to partnerships with organizations such as Ecoventura, Fundación Hábitat Sur, Corporación Miss Raxi y Miss Graci, and Deprisa, from 2022 to June 2025 we transported more than 32.000 kg of plastic, glass, and cardboard waste from the Galápagos to Guayaquil, Ecuador; more than 9,000 kg of single-use and flexible plastics from Leticia to Bogotá, Colombia; and more than 2.000 kg of plastics and cardboard from San Andrés and Providencia to Bogotá.
These initiatives strengthen the circular economy in these regions, ensuring proper waste management, supporting local community development and waste pickers, and promoting the protection of sensitive ecosystems.
As part of our commitment to biodiversity, we work with expert organizations to prevent illegal wildlife trafficking and raise awareness among our passengers. Since signing the Buckingham Declaration (2022) and through our partnership with WCS (2023 onward), we reinforced controls, expanded collaboration to Ecuador, and trained 143 employees in Colombia and Ecuador in wildlife identification and coordination with authorities. At Avianca, we are committed to protecting the environment and using natural resources sustainably. All our airlines operate under a single Environmental Policy aligned with the principles of Avianca Holdings S.A., which guides our actions toward responsible aviation through the reduction of fossil fuel use and noise, waste reduction, pollution prevention, compliance with current regulations, and continuous improvement of our performance.
This policy applies to all areas and operations—direct and indirect—in the countries where we operate, and promotes environmental responsibility among employees, suppliers, contractors, and customers.
To learn more about our environmental management, see the Avianca Group Environmental Policy here.
We have an environmental management system certified under the ISO 14001:2015 standard and validated by IQNET, which allows us to demonstrate Avianca’s commitment to continuously improving the organization’s environmental performance.
Thanks to the commitment of the entire organization, the certified stations are Rionegro, Quito, Guayaquil, El Salvador, and Bogotá, for the following processes:
We are proud to participate in environmental projects. In 2024, we carried out four environmental volunteer campaigns in the main countries where we operate: Colombia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, conducting activities to protect ecosystems. As a result, we planted 872 native trees in these areas and released more than 200 sea turtles. A total of 170 volunteers participated.
At avianca, caring for the environment is a priority. We are inspired to see how our steps in favor of the planet translate into real actions—and this is just the beginning. We embrace the challenge of continuing to contribute to the well-being of our planet. Together, we will fly toward a future that supports environmental protection!
